How to track crypto whales

“Whale” is just a name for an order or participant large enough to draw attention to the tape. Tracking whales is not about blindly copying every green or red print. It is about understanding whether that aggression is pushing the price, being absorbed or just making noise in an illiquid market.

What counts as a whale

It depends on the pair and the session. In BTC, a trade worth tens of thousands of dollars can be routine. In an altcoin, the same value can move the entire book. On TapeRadar you filter by a minimum value in USD to focus only on what matters for your setup.

How to read without getting carried away

1. Relative size

Compare it with the pair's recent volume. A “whale” during quiet hours may simply be a mid-sized participant in a thin book.

2. Spot or futures?

A large buy in futures may be a leveraged long or short covering. In spot, the reading of accumulation is a little cleaner — but it is still no guarantee of a trend. See the guide spot vs futures.

3. Price reaction

If aggressive buying lifts the price easily, there is little supply overhead. If heavy buying barely moves the price, someone may be selling with conviction (absorption).

4. Sequence, not a single print

An isolated trade is anecdotal. A sequence of aggression, aligned CVD and confirmation between markets forms a stronger narrative. CVD helps show whether aggression is accumulating on one side.

Practice routine on TapeRadar

  1. Open the terminal and choose a liquid pair (BTC or ETH).
  2. Adjust the minimum value filter to cut noise.
  3. Watch the session's whale rankings and the live tape.
  4. Note whether sweeps match CVD and price changes.
  5. Write down 3 events of the day — no obligation to trade.

Training your eye in “dead” sessions is just as useful as in dump/pump. You learn the market noise baseline.

Myths that get in the way

From reading to execution

TapeRadar is a flow-analysis and study tool; execution remains on the exchange. If you decide to trade after practicing, use risk management, preferably start with spot, and avoid turning every whale print into a trade of your own.

Where to trade with what you read on the tape

TapeRadar does not execute orders. If you decide to trade, use a liquid exchange, 2FA and keep position sizes small. Binance for majors and depth; MEXC for alts and listings.
